Former Jackson, Mississippi school teacher, Carla Hughes, has been convicted of murder in the death of Avis Banks and her unborn child.
Almost three years ago (November 29, 2006), Hughes entered the garage of the Ridgeland, Mississippi home that Banks shared with fiancé Keyon Pittman. Carla Hughes shot the pregnant woman in the leg, buttock and head, then stabbed her in the face and neck. The vicious, fatal attack was carried out in an attempt to secure a relationship with Pittman, a fellow teacher with whom Hughes was carrying on an affair.
Seems like an absurd plan. How many people have any overwhelming desire to be with a rage-filled murderer?
In regard to Hughes’ garage-entry, it’s notable that a lot of families who have self-installed home alarms often overlook the garage. That is a prime entry point for many criminals and setting up alarms and surveillance in that location is paramount.
This was a horrible crime with two entirely innocent victims. Obviously the Carla Hughes conviction cannot bring back Ms. Banks or her unborn baby, but the sentence might bring a little closure and long-awaited justice to her family and loved ones.
